Arizona is home to 7.1 million people with the Phoenix metropolitan area claiming just over 4.5 million in population. Another million Arizonians call the Tucson metro area home. So where do the rest of Arizona’s 1.6 million people live? Arizona is the sixth largest state in area (113,990 square miles). The rest of Arizonians live in small towns, villages and rural areas throughout the state.
Add a staggering 43 million visitors who come to Arizona annually. Many come for tourism and visit Arizona’s scenic sites, from the Grand Canyon to the Petrified Forest to Sedona. It’s easy to see that accidents and medical emergencies may occur in areas where no advanced medical care is available.
Medical emergencies aren’t planned. But whether you are a resident of Arizona or a visitor, AirCARE1 is an air ambulance provider serving the entire United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America, South America, Europe and Asia. We transport patients on aircraft from one medical facility to another medical facility, offering bedside to bedside transport for fragile and critically ill or injured patients.

AirCARE1 was founded by Denise Waye, a registered nurse who worked specifically as a flight nurse. She loved her job but was frustrated by her lack of formal training and felt that there was a better way to offer air ambulance services to patients in need. With that, AirCARE1 was founded over 10 years ago. AirCARE1 operates its own fleet of Learjets transporting patients safely and quickly to the medical help they need and/or back home after a medical emergency.
Our mission statement at AirCARE1 is to “Do what is right for our patient at all times as we transport them with exceptional care equal to or better than the best premiere medical facility.”
AirCARE1 operates its own fleet of aircraft under a 135 Air Carrier Certificate. We have an outstanding safety record and have transported thousands of patients safely throughout the world. Each aircraft is piloted by two ATP (Airline Transport Pilot) rated pilots with specific training in critical care. Every pilot receives annual training at one of the most-recognized flight training facilities in the United States.
Our mechanics maintain every aircraft to the most rigorous of standards. Our fleet of aircraft is air-ready for air ambulance service day-or-night.
We provide initial and continued training for our medical crews. We can safely transport traumatic injury patients as well as critically ill patients.
AirCARE1 has both the CAMTS (Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems) and the EURAMI (European Aeromedical Institute) certifications, a rarity among air ambulance services. We are also a preferred provider of International Assistance Group (IAG) and are only the second air ambulance company to be selected from the United States.
We at AirCARE1 are committed to the highest quality of care for our patients. It is common for patients to be naturally apprehensive and/or anxious when they need an air ambulance service. Below are a few examples of the types of circumstances our patients are in that require medical transportation:
Our patient care team is trained in holistic techniques to relieve the patient’s anxieties. We provide noise-canceling headsets with soothing therapeutic music. We offer hand massages with aromatherapy. On longer flights, patients and their traveling companion have access to in-flight movies and entertainment to keep their minds at ease. AirCARE1’s goal is to provide a calm and peaceful environment in the midst of a challenging situation.
From the tiniest and youngest patients to bariatric patients to geriatric patients, AirCARE1 transports everyone with specialized equipment to help make our bedside-to-bedside air ambulance experience as safe and stress-free as possible.
Neonatal/Infant – Babies don’t always wait until full-term to come into this world. In some cases, they may be born at the hospital where the hospital is not equipped with a NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit). This is where AirCARE1 can help. Our highly-trained neonatal team has the specialized training to care for your tiny baby while they are transported from the hospital to a larger facility with dedicated NICU. Your baby is transferred from their hospital of birth in a fully equipped level 3 neonatal intensive care unit, stays in that unit during transfer to the aircraft, and remains in our own NICU incubator until they are safely at the new NICU and are transferred to their NICU’s incubator. We also provide air ambulance service for critically ill or badly injured infants who need complex surgeries and treatments only available in large medical complexes.
Pediatric/Children – Our trained pediatric transport medical team understands that children aren’t just “small adults.” The psychological and physiological differences create challenges when a pediatric patient needs air ambulance transport. For example, younger children can lose body heat more quickly than adults. Pediatric patients also have higher metabolic rates and might suffer from low blood sugar during transport. Our team is alert to these differences and others. Many small children experience extreme anxiety when around strangers. You can rely on our team at AirCARE1 to help diffuse these kinds of emotionally charged situations.
Bariatric/Obese – Estimates indicated that over 3 million people in the U.S. are morbidly obese (i.e., they weigh at least 100 pounds above their ideal weight). Suppose you or a loved one is in an auto accident or becomes seriously ill, and the nearest hospital is not equipped to effectively treat a bariatric patient. AirCARE1 has a specially equipped loading ramp system that prevents tipping and wobbling while loading onto the aircraft. Our Learjet cargo doors are extra wide and can accommodate the girth of patients who weight up to 450 pounds. Our stretchers are specially designed so that the patient does not have to be transferred again until they reach their final destination hospital. Our bariatric-trained medical teams understand the special needs of a bariatric patient. We provide extra padding on the stretcher to reduce the risk of bed sores as well as providing 15 minutes of 100 percent oxygen before the flight to help prevent a fat emboli.
Geriatric/Elderly – Just over 14 percent of people in the U.S. are over 65. That’s over 44 million people. But what happens when they get sick or become injured when they are traveling and need to get appropriate medical care or need to get back home? AirCARE1’s medical crews are well equipped to care for geriatric patients with all types of injuries and illnesses. Many geriatric patients suffer from heart problems or COPD and require supplemental oxygen while flying. Our team pays special attention to geriatric patients’ fragile skin and also make sure that they receive adequate hydration. Our teams specialized training also includes working with patients who suffer from dementia or Alzheimer’s.
AirCARE1 utilizes our specially designed Lifeport Patient Care System. Our patients are transferred from their hospital bed to a stretcher where they stay until they are transferred to their bed at their destination hospital. We also utilize a customized loading system to avoid tipping and wobbling while transferring our patients into and out of our aircraft.
We utilize the most modern monitoring equipment to provide continuous monitoring of every patient. Our equipment includes:
Adult Monitoring Medical Equipment
Neonate Patient Monitoring Equipment
The care our teams provide allows fragile patients to safely fly in our airborne intensive care aircraft.
AirCARE1 provides patient comfort with the only 4-inch stretcher mattress in the air ambulance industry. Our Learjets have been specially modified for their mission as air ambulances. The stretcher features a monitor bracket so that the monitoring equipment is safely secured during transfer and flight. The adjustable knee lift provides patient comfort throughout the flight and prevents the patient from sliding down the stretcher during takeoff and landing.
Our Learjets fly at altitudes above 40,000 feet where there is less turbulence. With cruising speeds of over 500 mph, we get our patients to their destinations more quickly and more comfortably. The fleet of Learjet can also land at smaller airports giving us closer access to patients.
AirCARE1 recently added a Learjet 36A to their fleet of Learjet 35As. The Learjet 36A can fly five hours nonstop instead of four hours offering extra range. This aircraft allows us to serve Hawaii and the South Pacific.
If you or a loved one could use some medical assistance while traveling via commercial air, but do not need the full services of a dedicated medical transport flight, going with a commercial airline travel companion may be a good option for you. AirCARE1 offers commercial companions to travel with individuals needing assistance who may have a non-critical illness or injury. To qualify for these services, patients must be able to sit upright and fasten their seat belts. They must also be free from contagious diseases. Provided patients meet these requirements and several more, AirCARE1 will assign a commercial travel companion to escort the passenger during the flight back home. The travel companion will also make arrangements for the patient and his or her family members, including arranging ground transportation and getting all necessary pre-flight medical clearances.
